Product Description:
Himed has developed a process using a proprietary bioceramic that is used in the post-processing of metal 3D printed parts. This bioceramic is used to remove any loose metal fragments from the 3D printing process and provide a texture that will encourage cell attachment. The bioceramic is completely dissolved during the subsequent passivation and washing steps – leaving a residue-free surface. Alternative processing techniques use alumina or silica, and these particles can become embedded in the metal surface. This can lead to stress risers and poor coating adhesion.
Proprietary Bioceramic
Himed also manufactures many different types of calcium phosphate ceramics. Calcium phosphates are found in natural bone and are bioceramics. Some of our customers make porous 3D scaffold structures for bone repair, eliminating the need for bone grafts. These synthetic bone grafts can be designed to be permanent, or resorbable – allowing for new bone growth that will eventually replace the implanted material. We are not the final device manufacturer, our customers produce medical devices using our materials.
